Belo Horizonte Carbon Footprint Report Now Published

By Jo Dobson

Useful Simple Projects in collaboration with Best Foot Forward have produced a reference carbon footprint for one of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Host Cities, Belo Horizonte.

This is available to download (in Portuguese) below.

The reference footprint quantifies the nature and scale of greenhouse gas emissions relating to those activities relating to the preparation for, and staging of, the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013.  The total reference footprint is estimated at around 0.8 MtCO2e.

The reference footprint has provided a useful overview of where emissions are occurring, and has helped to quantify the baseline impact of the World Cup activities in Belo Horizonte. It has also helped the city and state identify opportunities to reduce emissions from the event.

Having implemented mitigation measures, Belo Horizonte should prepare a final footprint account. This will capture the impact all of the interventions undertaken against the baseline footprint.
