New research project launched today

As a Certified Social Enterprise, we have a strong social and environmental purpose, and reinvest our profits into education and research.

As we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis, we see that local authorities have a unique opportunity to help communities become more resilient and to build back better, whilst addressing the climate crisis. Yet at the same time, the public sector is more constrained than ever by shrinking budgets, and funding to finance sustainability interventions remains a challenge.

As such, Useful Projects is launching a research project which aims to provide advice, tips and pathways for local authorities looking to finance and accelerate the tangible delivery of their climate strategies.

Survey

As part of this research project, we are running a nationwide survey to explore various themes including sustainability reporting tools, green finance mechanisms and alternative delivery models.  The survey is for completion by local authorities’ climate change and/or finance officers and aims to gather information and insights about financing climate action.  The survey will close on the 7th of August.  Access the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/P9R7Z9N

Insight panel

We are also in the process of forming an Insight Panel of select senior figures to gather further insights. So far, the Insight Panel includes:

  • Sarah Cary, Executive Director of Place, London Borough of Enfield
  • Alison Knight, Executive Director of Neighbourhoods, Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council
  • Mary Aladegbola, Energy Manager, London Borough of Hackney
  • Matthew Essex, Corporate Director of Regeneration and Culture, London Borough of Redbridge
  • Elliot Smith, Commercial Manager Energy Infrastructure and Regeneration, Peterborough Council
  • Chris Murray, Group Director, Core Cities

Additional members of the Insight Panel are to be announced shortly.

Insight report

The output of this research project will be an Insight Report on financing climate action that combine these findings with our expertise in this area, providing valuable insights on shared barriers and innovative financing mechanisms to overcome them.
