Jo Dobson, Director at Useful Projects, has authored a chapter on sustainability in the Association of Project Management’s (APM) latest book, given her extensive experience of embedding sustainability into organisations and projects.

The APM Body of Knowledge provides the concepts, functions, and activities that make up professional project management. It is an essential resource for professionals seeking to adapt and thrive in today’s project environment.

The 8th edition emphasises innovation, sustainability, and societal impact, offering valuable insights into the principles, frameworks, and methods of contemporary project programme and portfolio management. It reflects the developing profession and the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world in which projects are delivered.

Jo explains, “The shift towards sustainable projects expands the role of a Project Manager significantly beyond meeting traditional time, cost, and quality criteria – ensuring they have a good understanding of sustainability and regenerative principles, challenges, and opportunities. In addition, they need the ability to implement practices that drive innovation, enhance stakeholder satisfaction, and future-proof projects against emerging challenges.”

The sustainability chapter covers four key topics to help Project Managers understand the fundamentals: the importance of sustainability in project management, integrating sustainability into the project lifecycle, sustainable products, and sustainability assessments.

It also emphasises the need for project professionals to understand regenerative principles, and have the ability to implement practices that drive innovation, enhance stakeholder satisfaction and future-proof projects against emerging challenges.

As part of the publication’s launch, Jo will be taking part in the APM webinar, ‘Project Managing for the Future: How Project Professionals Can Lead Through Complexity, Innovation and Change’, on Friday 6 June at 12.00 PM.

The AMP Body of Knowledge is available in paperback and as digital download here.
